do you ever wonder
why it has to be this way
does the cruelty in the world confuse you
do you suspect we should be better than this?
do you feel life is being sapped from you?
you have never /met/ a vampire, have you?
so why do they keep saying on the news,
you need to put down that wooden stake
if the meaning of life is other people,
the love we share, and the wide open world -
if we produce six times more than our grandparents
why can’t we afford a house with the people we love?
they complain we aren’t having kids -
do you have /any/ idea
what you have to do to livestock
for them to not want to breed?
how did they build a world around us
where everyone having a home
would be a revolution
where did the working class go?
now they just call us poor:
seems like a lot of work gets done by poor people
what kind of world has so much work undone
but never enough jobs
people starve and sleep on sidewalks
but profit is the only need
whoever says a better world is a dream
lies
and sleeps in a better bed than you do
when will we have had enough
all of us, and build a world of our own
where every person can afford to breathe
if you don’t see a future free from worry -
for your neighbor, your mother, your child -
why do you wait to change the world
don’t ask how - you know how.
/insist/ on better
without us they would literally starve
so starve them.
at every turn plot to give them one drop less
of your labor, your silence, your data
but we can’t wait for a better world
even while they remain,
gluttonous in their castles of glass
you and i must act, /do/ something
save the people dying in front of us
(or just out of sight -
where we are taught not to look;
those tents and carts
and alleys full of tired faces)
look those faces in the eyes.
to spend one more day looking away
is to accept that this is even a little ok
is it really so hard:
if your neighbor is hungry, feed them.
if a stranger needs water and clean socks,
fucking help them. what is wrong with you?
ask yourself, what had to be done to you
to make you think this way?
to let you think it isn’t your problem too
that you can afford to wait another day
it doesn’t have to be this way
it never had to be this way
don’t let it be this way
